The opposition: decision to imprison Shaikh Ali Salman is a trial of political ideas and intentions

The Bahrain national opposition societies consider the High Criminal Court's decision issued today, Tuesday (June 16th, 2015), to sentence Shaikh Ali Salman, Secretary General of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society to four (4) years imprisonment as a decision based on a political trial on Shaikh Salman's thoughts and peaceful activism. Shaikh Salman has maintained a peaceful approach in his activism throughout decades and maintained such peaceful practices leading to his arrest on December 28, 2014. His arrest is reminiscent of tactics prevalent during the State Security era that was instated in the country for more than 25 years and is now being revived in the present time in various forms.

The opposition demands the immediate release of Al Wefaq's Secretary General, considering him as a prisoncer of conscience, and to strive towards penetrating the security wall to initiate a serious, effective and genuine dialogue that will spare our country from security, economic, political and social reprecussions caused by the iron fist policy practiced by Bahraini authorities against the opposition forces and their audience.

The opposition reaffirms the need to maintain peacefulness in the popular movement and to stay clear from any situations that may lead to violence and loss of civility. The world has witnessed the Bahraini people's struggle and peaceful movement despite the grief and ongoing violations, torture to death, and extrajudicial killings, stressing the continuation of the struggle to achieve the just demands of freedom, democracy, social justice and respect for human rights. The opposition calls on the release of thousands of detainees, imprisoned on the background of the political and consitutional crisis that swept the country and the resulting economic and social consequences, and refuses any and all calls for violence from any source.

The opposition emphasises that the harsh sentences imposed by the courts and citizenship depravation from citizens of this country due to their opposing views, restrictions on political leaders and activists, and the process of political naturalization, will not deter our people from continuing in the national struggle to realize just demands guaranteed by the Constitution, the National Action Charter and international legitimacy.

The opposition calls for blocking those who try to tamper with societal fabric and transmit a culture of hatred through all forms of media and social media, stressing the need for national unity between all Bahraini society components, strengthening of internal cohesion, and deterring from provocation attempts and practices exercised by those who hate our country and its people.

The national democratic opposition forces extend their gratitude to Shaikh Ali Salman's defense team, whom faced a lot of difficulties and obstacles and were deprived from legal pleadings, praising their patience and adherence to the truth in accordance with all the relevant international conventions. The opposition also praises the large segments of Bahraini people, including human rights organizations and natoinal figures, and the position of many countries and international human rights organizations, especially Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the International Federation for Human Rights, and the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations, in which the High Commissioner of Human Rights, Prince Zeid Ra'ad Al-Hussein, called for the release of Sheikh Ali Salman and prisoners of conscience and called for a genuine dialogue between the Bahraini government and the opposition that will help our country out of its current crisis.

The solidarity of the international community and various organizations with the Bahraini people in support of their peaceful struggle to achieve legitimate demands confirms the validatiy of peaceful approach and resistance in a national movement. This affirms the contiuation of such approach until we achieve political and social reforms and freedom, striving for a democratic civil state based on equal citizenship, respsect for human rights, and rejection of sectarianism and discrimination in all forms. We stress that the only way out of the crisis is through genuine and inclusive national dialogue and political will from the regime.

The opposition salutes Shaikh Ali Salman on his courage and consistent principles in defense of his people's issues and his commitment to a peaceful approach as a strategic option in this long-standing struggle, renewing our solidarity with him as he is detained in prison.
