Waad Remains Unnotified of Ministry of Justice’s Official Legal Action

Al Moosawi:  Ebrahim Sharif is a Prisoner of Conscience and a Rightful Leader of Waad

The National Action Society (Waad) has stated that it did not receive the official statement of claim pertaining to the legal action filed by the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs (MOJ) as reported by the local news on their websites on Thursday.

Waad’s Acting Secretary General Radhi Al Moosawi stated that, “the MOJ’s legal claim stems from convenient allegations solely intended to restrict political activism in Bahrain, particularly that of opposition societies which people rely on for the maintenance of civil peace and social stability”.  He further clarified that, “Waad and other nationalistic opposition forces work through legitimate peaceful means for freedom, social justice, genuine democratic values and the restoration of national unity, which has been severely compromised as a result of the ongoing hatred and incitement speech instigated and propagated by official media outlets.  The latest example of the same being an article published in a local newspaper and social media which was a clear case of libel, defamation and contempt for a major religious component of Bahraini society in which officials where directly involved in addition to threatening opposition leaders with violence and punishment.”

Al Moosawi added, “It would have been more fruitful of the MOJ to discuss with the political societies the development and revision of the laws applicable to them in line with the accepted international standards of political work.  Instead, restrictions on their activities are being imposed through unnecessary litigation, which paves the way to a suspension of activities initially and later full dissolution.  Such litigious persecution rests on allegations and justifications that have only been acted upon two years later, which serves to demonstrate their lack of seriousness.  Additionally, what the MOJ is currently undertaking is a desperate endeavour to obstruct the society’s path towards attaining legitimate demands which meet people’s aspirations.”

He also stated, “Waad has forwarded a letter to the Directorate of Political Societies at the MOJ on 17 July 2014 in response to a telephone call received by Attorney and Political Bureau member Hafudh Hafudh requesting the rectification of the society’s status via the striking off of the Secretary General Ebrahim Sharif from the members’ register, the reorganisation of the internal leadership frameworks and the abolishment of the post of Acting Secretary General.”  He reiterated that, “The stance of Waad’s leadership and its members remains unequivocal with respect to its Secretary General.  He is a prisoner of conscience who should be immediately released in accordance with the international standards and treaties ratified by Bahrain, at the forefront of which are the recommendations of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) duly accepted by HM the King, the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Council issued in September 2012 as approved by the government of Bahrain, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Bill of Rights and the demands of international human rights organisations, all of which must be complied with.”
